This participatory painting was a result of public contributions to the central hub line composed by poet Andrew Philip"Only a naked flame could have started this killer fire." In the run up to the event and over the weekend of Hidden Door arts festival, the public were invited to contribute lines in response to the piece for inclusion in it. Lines were added in situ so that the piece grew as the festival progressed, and continued with further contributions after the show.
With over sixty contributions this interactive work proved to be very engaging, so further to the painting I produced a text based casebound artists book naming it CLOUD which went on to show at the London Art Books Fair, Whitechapel Gallery September 2010 and the Visual Arts Scotland exhibition at the Royal Scottish Academy in 2011
An experimental work in progress...before, during and after the event...
3331 Independents - TOKYO
Towards the end of 2010 I spent a concentrated five week research period travelling in Japan. I also took part in an arts festival in Tokyo exhibiting work and extending an invitation for audience contributions, in both writing and drawing.
Hidden Door 2 - EDINBURGH
Returning to an Edinburgh audience at Hidden Door 2 provided an excellent opportunity to repeat the practice of Tokyo and see what similarities and differences may lie between the two audiences.
Ongoing studio practice continues new work following on from these creative exchanges - Tokyo, Edinburgh and also Ireland - to interweave, reinterpret and merge contributions with my own.
